Israel says Hezbollah’s top commander Jafar Kadir Faur was killed in Lebanon

The Israeli army announced on Saturday that it killed Jafar Kadir Faur, a senior commander of Hezbollah’s Nasser Brigade rocket unit in southern Lebanon. The military said it was responsible for multiple attacks against Israel since October 2023.

Hezbollah did not immediately comment on or confirm Faur’s death.

“Faour was responsible for numerous rocket attacks on the Golan, including the attack on Kibbutz Ortal that killed Israeli civilians, the attack on Majdal Shams that killed 12 children and injured many others, and last Thursday’s rocket attack on Metula In the statement made by the Israel Defense Forces, it was said that “it resulted in the death of 5 civilians.”

The IDF stated that the Hezbollah unit that fired rockets at Israel on October 8 was also under his command.

Earlier on Saturday, Israeli naval forces said they had captured a senior Hezbollah operative in northern Lebanon. However, they did not disclose his identity. An Israeli military official said that “a senior Hezbollah agent who served as an expert in his field was arrested.”

Lebanese officials also said they were investigating whether Israel was behind the capture of a Lebanese sea captain who was taken away by a group of gunmen who came ashore near the northern town of Batroun on Friday.

“The operator has been transferred to Israeli territory and is currently being investigated,” the military official told the AP news agency, without naming the person in custody.

Lebanese military officials also added that the captured captain may have ties to Hezbollah. They stated that the investigation examined whether the man was affiliated with Hezbollah or potentially working for an Israeli intelligence agency, and speculated that an Israeli force may have come to extract him.

Hezbollah issued a statement describing the incident as “Zionist aggression in the Batroun area” but did not provide further details or confirm whether any of its members had been captured by Israeli forces.
