What you need to know before heading to the polls in South Carolina

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – As Election Day approaches, here’s what you need to know if you’re going to vote in South Carolina.

WHEN IS ELECTION DAY?

Election Day is November 5, 2024.

WHEN ARE THE SURVEYS OPEN?

On election day, the polls will open at 7 am and close at 19:00. Anyone who lines up at 19:00 will be allowed to vote.

CAN I TAKE MY CHILD WITH ME?

Yes, children under 18 can accompany voters at the voting booth.

CAN I VOTE EARLY?

Early voting in South Carolina ends on Saturday, November 2.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING?

Voters in South Carolina will be asked to show one of the following photo IDs:

  • Driving licence
  • ID card issued by the SC Department of Motor Vehicles
  • Voter Registration Card with Photo
  • Federal Military ID
  • US Passport

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT HAVE PHOTO ID?

According to the South Carolina Election Commission:

If you don’t have one of these photo IDsYou can make your voting experience as quick and easy as possible by getting one before Election Day. If you are registered as a voter, you can go to your county voter registration and election offices and have your photo taken by providing your date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security Number. You can even do this on election day. Free ID Cards are also available from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

If you can’t get a photo IDBring your voter registration card without a photo to the polling place. If you need to replace your voter registration card without a photo, you can contact your county voter registration office. You can cast a provisional ballot after signing an affidavit stating that you have a reasonable disability to obtain a photo ID. A reasonable impediment is any valid reason beyond your control that prevents you from obtaining a photo ID. Some examples include: a disability or illness, a conflict with your work schedule, lack of transportation, lack of a birth certificate, family responsibilities, a religious objection to being photographed, and any other impediment you deem reasonable. This ballot will be valid unless someone proves to the county voter registration and elections board that you lied about your identity or have the specified disability.

To vote under the reasonable disability exception:

  1. Inform the survey administrators that you do not have a photo ID and cannot obtain one.
  2. Present your current, non-photo registration card.
  3. Sign the statement provided by the survey administrators explaining why you did not receive a photo ID.
  4. Use a provisional ballot that will be valid unless the county voter registration and elections board has reason to believe your affidavit is false.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU FORGET YOUR PHOTO ID?

If you forget your photo ID when you go to vote, you will be able to vote with a provisional ballot, which will only be valid if you present photo ID to your county election office before the election is certified.

The results will be announced the Friday after the general election on 8 November.

CAN I VOTE WITHOUT A VOTER REGISTRATION CARD WITHOUT A PHOTO?

Yes. You can also get a replacement card at any time from your district’s election office.

What happens if I vote ABSENT?

Absentee ballots must be delivered to the county election office by mail or in-person delivery by 7 p.m. on Election Day. They can also be returned to the early voting center during the early voting period.

ARE THERE LAWS REGARDING CANDIDATES POSTING SIGNALS ALONG THE ROAD?

According to the South Carolina Election Commission:

Yes, there are many state laws that address political signs on highways as well as county and municipal ordinances. See SC Code Rules Sections 57-25-10, 57-25-140, and 7-25-210. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the entity (state, county, or municipality) that maintains the road to enforce applicable sign laws.

CAN CANDIDATES OR THEIR REPRESENTATIVES TAKE PEOPLE TO THE BALLOTS TO VOTE?

Yes; Any person may give a voter a ride as long as it is done solely to help them vote. No one is allowed to offer anything of value in exchange for voting.

CAN CAMPAIGNS POST SIGNALS ALONG THE ROAD?

According to the South Carolina Election Commission:

Yes, there are many state laws that address political signs on highways as well as county and municipal ordinances. See SC Code Rules Sections 57-25-10, 57-25-140, and 7-25-210. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the entity (state, county, or municipality) that maintains the road to enforce applicable sign laws.

CAN CANDIDATES AND/OR CAMPAIGNS TALK TO VOTERS AT THE VOTER PLACE?

According to the South Carolina Election Commission:

Yes, but there are restrictions:

Inside the polling place: Campaign is not allowed. Candidates can be present at a polling place and speak to voters as long as they are not campaigning, intimidating voters or interfering with the election process.

Within 500 meters of the polling place entrance: Candidates and campaign staff may campaign as long as it does not intimidate voters or interfere with the election process. However, no campaign literature, banners or posters are allowed. Candidates are permitted to wear a badge no larger than 4.25” x 4.25” indicating only the candidate’s name and the office sought. Candidates must remove their badges when entering the polling place.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU TAKE THE EXIT SURVEY?

Exit voting is legal and voluntary but is not conducted by the South Carolina Election Commission or county boards of elections.

WHERE CAN I FILE A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE ELECTION?

If you are experiencing a problem at your particular polling place, contact your poll administrator or county elections office as soon as possible.
