Beaver Valley Week 1 Football Playoff Recap: South Side loses in first round

The first round of the WPIAL playoffs is over, and there have been a few upsets in Beaver Valley that highlight what will be an exciting next few weeks of high school football.

WPIAL football playoff first round results

Aliquippa 34, Trinity 14

The Quips advance past Trinity to the WPIAL Class 4A semifinals thanks to a balanced offensive performance. With Penn State senior running back Tiqwai Hayes healthy, he rushed 22 times for 176 yards and three touchdowns. Junior point guard Marques Council Jr. He also got into a rhythm, going 7-for-15 for 147 yards with a pair of touchdown passes to Qalil Goode and Antonio Reddic. Aliquippa will now face Thomas Jefferson in the semifinals next Friday at a location and time to be determined.

South Side Beaver 39, Jefferson-Morgan 30

The Rams pulled off the upset of Tri-County South Conference Champion Jefferson-Morgan. AC Corfield rushed 24 times for 171 yards and two touchdowns, while Amare Moman carried nine times for 28 yards and a touchdown. As a team, the Rams combined for 218 yards on the ground. Defensively, the team took down Rockets point guard Houston Guesman twice. South Side will face Bishop Canevin next week in the Class 1A quarterfinals at a location and time to be determined.

Thomas Jefferson 28, West Allegheny 7

West Allegheny’s season ended in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs, and Thomas Jefferson used a strong offensive attack to defeat West Allegheny. Brock Cornell capped his high school football career by rushing nine times for 90 yards, scoring the team’s only points of the game with a 70-yard run in the third quarter. The Jaguars were able to pace themselves on the ground as a team, rushing for over 350 yards.

WPIAL Class 2A and 3A first-round bye opponents announced

In Class 2A, Ellwood City will face Southern Allegheny on Nov. 8 at Helling Stadium.

In Class 3A, Beaver Area will have a rematch with Avonworth on Nov. 8 after the Antelopes beat Greensburg Salem 43-27. The Bobcats and Avonworth faced off at Pat Tarquinio field on Oct. 25, with Beaver Area taking the game. With a score of 34-14.

Yellow Jackets’ Mt. Following a 44-20 win over Pleasant, Central Valley will face Freeport in the quarterfinals next week at Sarge Alberts Stadium.
