Timescale embeds advanced AI into PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL database platform company Timescale expands with launch of PostgreSQL AI toolset pgai Vectorizer.

It’s an open-source (cloud-hosted) software offering that promises to enable developers to create advanced AI applications without the need for external tools or specialized expertise.

As a popular database, PostgreSQL is used by: 49% of developers Worldwide, according to StackOverflow.

Timescale says it is dedicated to bringing cutting-edge technology to the PostgreSQL community without the need for specialized tools or knowledge. The company did this by extending PostgreSQL for real-time analytics. Now Timescale is bringing AI to PostgreSQL with the launch of the pgai package and pgai Vectorizer.

Manage multiple vehicles

Developers are under increasing pressure to deliver AI systems such as search engines, access augmented generation (RAG) and AI agents. But this often involves managing complex workflows across multiple tools: embedding rendering, data processing, and real-time synchronization.

New specialized vehicles appear every day, increasing the infrastructure burden and requiring new expertise, but few have the operational maturity or flexibility needed for production.

Pgai Vectorizer integrates the entire embedding process into PostgreSQL, allowing developers to create, store and manage vector embeddings alongside relational data without the need for external tools or additional infrastructure.

It integrates the entire AI workflow into PostgreSQL along with the full pgai suite, simplifying complex workflows into a single system. This allows developers to create state-of-the-art AI applications with fewer resources using familiar SQL commands.

“(I feel) pgai Vectorizer is a game changer. “Pgai Vectorizer promises to streamline our entire AI workflow, from rendering deployment to real-time synchronization, by integrating everything directly into PostgreSQL, allowing us to deliver AI applications faster and more efficiently,” said MarketReader CTO Web Begole. “The need for external tools and expertise makes it easier for our team to focus on innovation rather than infrastructure.”

Thousands of developers already use the pgai suite of AI tools, and with pgai Vectorizer they now have even greater power to streamline workflows and accelerate AI development.

Unified AI and data platform

pgai Vectorizer’s key differentiating capabilities include a unified AI and data platform to manage all data (vectors, metadata, event data) for AI applications, while managing the deployment process on the same reliable PostgreSQL database platform without the need for external systems.

Real-time synchronization automatically synchronizes vector embeddings with the latest data changes, eliminating obsolescence and conflicting sources of truth. Here we also find version tracking and compatibility to keep track of model versions and ensure backward compatibility during rollout for seamless transitions.

While custom vector databases or bolt-on systems require complex setups and specialized expertise, pgai Vectorizer, built entirely on PostgreSQL, offers an experience that claims to go beyond vector searching.

“By embedding AI in PostgreSQL, pgai Vectorizer enables any developer to deliver breakthrough AI applications faster while significantly reducing infrastructure costs,” said Ajay Kulkarni, CEO of Timescale. “We are proud to transform PostgreSQL beyond a reliable database into the full AI development platform teams have come to expect.”

pgai Vectorizer can redefine what’s possible with PostgreSQL by combining the simplicity developers trust with the cutting-edge AI capabilities they need.
