Lack of road increases suffering of Faridpur village residents

Villagers say that building a 100-meter road connecting the village to the neighboring village will save them from this difficult situation.

The plight of 50 families living in Sonadangi, a small village surrounded by low-lying areas in Ballabhdi union under Saltha upazila of Faridpur, is greatly increasing day by day as the village has no approach road from any direction.

The absence of roads forces villagers to walk from agricultural lands to the district and upazila sadar towns. During the monsoon season, the village is surrounded by flood waters and locals have no option but to use boats to commute to work.

Local school and college students are suffering, as well as those who have to leave the village every day for work.

Parents also face difficulty in getting their children married as people from nearby villages or other areas tend to avoid sending marriage proposals due to lack of proper connection.

The people of Sonadangi said that the construction of a 100-meter road that will connect the village to the neighboring village via link roads will save them from their bad situation.

Currently, around 200 people from 50 families live in the village.

During a recent visit, this correspondent saw the results of monsoon rains in the areas around the village. The roads passing through the agricultural lands are muddy, and farmers carrying their crops and villagers, including school-going children, have to pass through this mud.

“Although our electricity is 100 percent, we have no way of approaching it. We have no way of taking anyone to the hospital in case of emergency. We have to walk through mud every day to go to the market or bazaar. Upazila town,” said villager Selima Begum.

“Also, no one wants to marry their own children to our children due to the connection problem. We call on the authorities to put an end to our victimization by making such a way,” he said.

Khondokar Saifur Rahman Shahin, president of Ballabhdi Union Parishad, said: “Attempts to build roads have been made several times in the past but they were not successful due to lack of government land.

“Also, many land owners are not willing to give up some of their land for the road. We have informed the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) about the issue,” he said.

Contacted, Saltha UNO MD Anisur Rahman Bali said that there was no government land available for road construction. “Road building initiatives can be initiated if local people allow roads to be built on some of their land.”
