Former Packers coach Mike Holmgren advances to Hall of Fame

Holmgren led the two teams to a total of three Super Bowl appearances. He had gone this far in the election process last year, too.

Super Bowl-winning coach Mike Holmgren is among nine semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Holmgren, along with Bill Arnsparger, Tom Coughlin, Chuck Knox, Dan Reeves, Marty Schottenheimer, George Seifert, Mike Shanahan and Clark Shaughnessy, advanced to the next stage in the selection process. Holmgren also moved into this phase of the process last year.

A finalist in the Coach category will be selected on November 19.

Holmgren coached the Packers from 1992 to 1998, leading the team to six playoff appearances, including three NFC Central titles, three NFC championship game appearances and back-to-back Super Bowls. The Packers won Super Bowl XXXI in New Orleans but lost Super Bowl XXXII in San Diego.

coached Seattle Seahawks from 1999 to 2008 and led this team to its first Super Bowl after the 2005 season. Seattle lost to Pittsburgh.

Holmgren was a highly sought-after assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers when Packers general manager Ron Wolf hired him to lead the Packers. The team went 9-7 in Holmgren’s first year, after going 4-12 the previous season. Holmgren was a Favre whisperer; He helped turn raw, inexperienced point guard Brett Favre into one of the best in the game. Favre is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Holmgren coached the Packers 75-35 and has a career record of 161-111.

Holmgren was the general manager of the Seahawks and team president of the Cleveland Browns. He is a member of: Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and Seattle Seahawks Ring of Honor.
