Former Seattle Mariners All-Star Selected Free Agent, New Team Will Be Needed in 2025

Former Seattle Mariners All-Star first baseman Ty France will need a new team in 2025. He was made a free agent after being acquired by the Cincinnati Reds.

The following comes from MLBTradeRumors with some insight into France’s contract structure:

would be eligible for arbitration and Reflected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz He will earn $8.6 million in his final season under club control. Today’s direct and subsequent free agency elections are effectively an early non-bidding period.

Considering the looming financial commitment, it is understandable why the Reds would want to leave France.

France, 30, was designated for assignment by the Mariners in July and subsequently signed with the Reds. He hit just .223 in Seattle with eight home runs. However, he has been a valuable member of the organization for several years since being acquired in a 2020 trade. He helped Seattle break the drought in 2022 and made the All-Star game that season. He was a lifetime .266 hitter with the M’s.

He performed better in the final 52 games of the season with the Reds. He hit .251 with five homers and 20 RBIs, perhaps benefiting from an easier travel schedule and a more hitter-friendly ballpark. The Reds, like the Mariners, missed the playoffs.

Given his age and track record, the Frenchman is expected to have no problem finding an opportunity this offseason, but it remains to be seen whether he will settle for a minor league deal.

sailors The plan for the first phase is currently unclear. Luke Raley is capable of playing this position but will likely need a teammate.
