Biggest Takeaways from Atlanta’s 133-120 Loss to Washington

After losing to the Wizards on Monday night, the Hawks were hoping to get revenge on their Southeast Division rival on Wednesday night and show that Monday was just an anomaly. Even though they were shorthanded, Atlanta was still the favorite and the Wizards were starting three rookies and were also missing Kyle Kuzma.

But the Hawks still lost, and Wednesday’s loss wasn’t all that different from Monday’s loss. The Hawks looked good throughout the first half and collapsed defensively in the second half, unable to defend the three-point line. That now makes it three straight losses for Atlanta, and after a thrilling 2-0 start, the Hawks are having to pick themselves up and try to right the ship before things go south.

So what are the big takeaways from last night’s game?

1. Hawks collapsed again in the second half

Atlanta led by eight points at halftime, but for the second straight game that lead quickly disappeared and the Wizards took the lead from the third. In the second half, Washington shot 60% from the field and 47% from three. In the fourth quarter alone, Washington shot 70% from the field and 67% from 3-point range. Jonas Valanciunas, Bilal Coulibaly, Corey Kispert, Bub Carrington and Jordan Poole reached double digits in the second half. The Hawks were without their best defender in Dyson Daniels and De’Andre Hunter, but letting the Wizards do the same thing to you in the second half as they did on Monday is inexcusable. Atlanta has improved defensively by most measures, but its three-point defense is currently the worst in the NBA.

2. Keaton Wallace did a good job in bench minutes

Since the Hawks were down four of their top five ball-handlers, they were forced to rely on Keaton Wallace, who signed a two-way contract with the team. Wallace played just over 14 minutes in the game and did some good things while on the floor. He finished the game with eight points on 3-3 shooting and was solid defensively as well. The Hawks didn’t want to see Wallace play such a big role this season, but he may have to if the Hawks need to take a hit.

3. The Hawks need to find a way to bounce back from these injuries

The best-case scenario for the Hawks would be to get Dyson Daniels and De’Andre Hunter back on Friday against the Kings. Otherwise, things could get worse for Atlanta. They have already been without Bogdanovic and Bufkin for a month and Krejci for two weeks. It’s early in the season, but the Hawks are already in great shape and it will be up to the coaching staff to come up with some solutions, otherwise things could snowball for Atlanta.
