Crystal Palace midfielder Will Hughes describes the increased confidence in the team after beating Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday: “I think it was good to come off the back of a much-needed win in the league on Sunday (against Tottenham). “It was good to keep that momentum going.

“We’ve said the last few days, especially today, there’s no point in winning unless you replicate that intensity and energy.

“The outcome may vary from game to game, but as long as you maintain these principles you have a good chance and that’s what happened.

“We are ready for every game. It’s been a slow start in the league and confidence has dropped, then you start to retreat into your shell.

“Fortunately, we needed this win to bring people out of their shells and make us play like we did at the end of last season and you can see we played non-stop for 90 minutes and deserved the win in the end.”
