    MTSU closes Tuesday after student dies by suicide on campus, vigil held

    Middle Tennessee State University Following the death of a student at the university library on Monday, it was closed with counseling services on Tuesday.

    MTSU President Sydney McPhee It announced that it had decided to cancel classes on Monday and close most offices and libraries on Tuesday. The student population at MTSU is approximately 20,500, based on 2024-25 college enrollment information.

    “My hope is that our community will use this time to grieve and reach out to the support resources available,” McPhee said in the statement. “Essential services, including counseling resources, will remain open and available.”

    Campus events scheduled for Tuesday may proceed at the discretion of event organizers. McPhee’s statement stated that normal operations will resume on Wednesday.

    McPhee’s statement added: “On behalf of our entire community, I want to extend our deepest condolences.” “If you need help or support, please contact us. You are not alone.”

    Murfreesboro police are leading the investigation into the student’s death by suicide, spokesman Larry Flowers said in a press release Monday evening.

    A “Pray for MTSU” vigil will be held on Wednesday at 18:00. Flyer for the vigil organized by MTSU Student Government Association invites people to join the university community in forming a “circle of support and reflection” in front of James E. Walker Library.

    SGA President Michai Mosby said he hopes the vigil will allow our community to “find comfort and strongly support each other,” according to McPhee’s statement.

    The prayer vigil flyer called on the MTSU community to come together “to remember, support, and stand in solidarity.”

    “This vigil is a moment when everyone comes together in unity, shares compassion, and finds strength,” the brochure said.

    MTSU offers consulting services

    The MTSU press release included the following details regarding access to counseling services:

    • Crisis support for students MTSU Consulting ServicesLocated in Keathley University Central Room 322, it will be open to students from 8am to 8pm on Tuesday;
    • You can reach the MTSU Mobile Crisis Number 24 hours a day at 1-800-704-2651;
    • A three-digit Suicide Helpline is available 24 hours a day at 988;
    • Faculty and staff crisis support will be available in the Student Union Ballroom (Part B) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Outside these hours, faculty and staff can contact the relevant institution. Counseling and Psychological Services Center at 615-898-2271;
    • Employees can also receive support 24 hours a day through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provided by Optum Behavioral Health at 855-437-3486.
