Another student, 18-year-old Mac Brown Mbah Mbanwei, was arrested after the incident and charged with murder, authorities said.

Austin-Travis County EMS was called to the school at 14832 FM 973 around 12:47 a.m. Tuesday after a Manor school district police officer found and disarmed a student armed with a knife, district and Manor police officials said. Authorities said Loving was pronounced dead at 1:12 p.m. Loving was stabbed multiple times in the chest with a kitchen knife, police said Tuesday night.

District officials plan to cancel classes at Manor High School, as well as Manor Early College High School and Manor High School, through the weekend to give students time to grieve, Superintendent Robert Sormani said. Classes and extracurricular activities are also canceled through Friday.

The district also plans to hold a memorial service Friday for students, staff and community members to mourn and plans to release more details soon, Sormani said.

“No one should have to experience this kind of pain,” he said.

Manor police said they did not know if there was an argument that led to the stabbing, but Loving and Mbanwei knew each other and had been involved in a previous fight last week, said Lt. Lawrence Rideau, Manor Police Department spokesman. He did not know the circumstances of the previous discussion.

Rideau said no staff members were in the boy’s restroom at the time of the incident, but there were student witnesses interviewed by police.

As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, Mbanwei was being held in the Travis County Jail on $1 million bail.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, but police said the incident was isolated and they do not believe there is any threat to students or the public.

According to the district, students who want to talk to counselors can do so Thursday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Early College High School. Sormani said students can get support via video chat, in person or by phone.

He said classes could resume Monday, but district staff will take into account any time students need to process the incident.

“I don’t expect it to be a normal day,” Sormani said. “I don’t expect it to be a normal week because there will be a lot to unpack.”
