FC Cincinnati defeats NYCFC in MLS Cup playoff game 1

Game One to FC Cincinnati.

FC Cincinnati opened its 2024 MLS Cup playoff series on Monday with a 1-0 victory over New York City FC at TQL Stadium in front of a crowd of 21,413. Yamil Asad’s first goal in the 51st minute was decisive as FCC won Game One of the best-of-three series.

The series continues on Saturday with NYCFC’s home game at New York Mets’ Citi Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. A win in regulation or a shootout would see FC Cincinnati advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

FC Cincinnati threatened to attack throughout Monday’s game and ultimately defeated NYCFC 21-3. FC Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano saved the only shot he faced from NYCFC, and the defense in front of him played as well as they have all season.

“I’m really pleased with tonight’s effort in every aspect,” FC Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan said afterward. “I think the defensive pressure has increased a lot from the last game against (NYCFC)… The centre-backs were outstanding but I also think the players in front of our backline did a really good job of putting pressure on the back. There were some really good looks, especially in the second half. But the first 45 , it looked like a play-off game in the sense that both teams defended well, were organized and were difficult to play against and then, you know, we saw that moment in the second half I think we had a good game.

“It’s one step down the road, but we know it doesn’t get any easier, so we have to be ready to turn it around, get positive results from this and create a better version of (NYCFC).”

Asad’s tally resulted from a centering strike into the goalpost by Luciano Acosta, who earned his sixth career postseason goal contribution as an FC Cincinnati player. Asad nodded to Acosta’s aerial pass and sent the ball into the net, giving Cincinnati the game-winning goal.

For Acosta, the assist made him the seventh active MLS player to record at least three career goals and assists in the league’s postseason.

“It’s not an easy finish to meet a ball like that and keep it under the bar. (Yamil) has an idea of the game,” Noonan said.

Cincinnati then missed opportunities to ice the game. Since there is no total-score rule in place for the current MLS Cup playoff format, more goals wouldn’t have affected the rest of the series but would have made Monday’s victory easier to complete.

Luca Orellano, playing as a forward for the second game in a row and making an FCC-high five of 22 shots, drilled a shot off the post in the 62nd minute. In the closing seconds, Nicholas Gioacchini missed an escape opportunity in the 95th minute when he shot wide as NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese darted off his line to apply pressure.

Despite not having a second point on 22 shots, Cincinnati still managed to pull off the victory. This was also made easier in the closing moments when NYCFC were assessed a straight red card.

In the extra time of the second half, Tayvon Gray and Acosta struggled with the ball near midfield. When the match ended, Acosta was face down and Gray was standing upright with the ball, but the game was then over and Gray was given a red card for serious foul play.

A later video assistant referee (VAR) check confirmed the red card. Gray will be suspended for the second game of the series.

Planning for Gray’s absence will be done at a later time. FC Cincinnati was intent on enjoying victory for the first time at TQL Stadium since August 31st, if only for one night.

“It was a fantastic performance from the team and we are proud of what we produced,” said Chidozie Awaziem. “I mean, it wasn’t easy. We were expecting this kind of game and yes, I’m happy we got our first win and thank you to the fans who came to support us. We felt that energy and it kept us going.” We’re going.”
