Relative of speeding man claims death at hospital, state police say

VERNON, CT (WFSB) – A man was hit with several charges after police caught him going 66 mph on a highway through Vernon.

State police identified the driver as 50-year-old Christopher Carter of Enfield.

Troopers said around 5:10 p.m. Sunday, they received a series of calls to 911 about a reckless driver driving a Mercedes SUV.

The driver was on Interstate 84 west in the area of ​​exit 64.

An officer located the vehicle with Massachusetts plates.

Police confirmed the driver was speeding. State police said his speed was measured at 106 mph in a 65 mph zone.

Police also noted that the driver failed to maintain his lane.

Emergency lights and siren were activated by police.

The driver, identified as Carter, pulled over onto the right shoulder at exit 63 in Manchester.

When asked about his speed, Carter told police a family member was dying in the hospital. Police later determined that this statement was a lie.

Carter was arrested and charged with reckless driving and failure to maintain proper lane.

He was released on $1,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 12 in Rockville Superior Court.
