BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public that QR codes posted at local boat launches have been “compromised.”

The Sheriff’s Office says: “Scanning these QR codes directs users to a suspicious website currently believed to originate from Russia. Please DO NOT scan these QR codes or click any links.”

Investigators say they are working with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources to warn visitors about recreational boat ramps and launches.

If you encounter any suspicious-looking QR codes or have already scanned one, you are advised to refrain from sharing personal information or clicking on additional links. The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources is working to fix the codes.
