Important Offseason Dates for MLB and Diamondbacks 2024-25

Major League’s offseason officially begins the day after the World Series ends. If the Dodgers finish beating the Yankees, it could happen as early as Wednesday, October 30th. In the unlikely event that the Yankees extend the series to seven games by Saturday, the offseason will begin no later than Sunday, Nov. 3.

Free agency begins at 9:00 a.m. EST, The day after the World Series. Eligible players, including those with six or more years of service, are now free agents. However, during what is known as the “quiet period”, they can only sign contracts with their current club. After five days, free agents can begin negotiations and sign a contract with any team.

The Diamondbacks’ players who will become free agents include Christian Walker, Josh Bell, Paul Sewald and Kevin Newman.

Trade Market It is officially open the day after the conclusion of the World Series.

There are three types of options: Player Option, Club Option and Mutual Option. Regardless of who calls the shots, the decision must be made by the end of Day 5 after the conclusion of the World Series.

There is only one D-back with a player option, Jordan Montgomery. The Diamondbacks have club options on Merrill Kelly and Eugenio Suarez. Qualifying Offer: Teams must decide whether to make a Qualifying Tender to any of their free agents no later than five days after the conclusion of the World Series. Among the D-backs’ free agents, Christian Walker is the only one expected to receive a QO.

If Walker accepts this offer, he will remain with the Diamondbacks for one more year with a salary of approximately $21 million. If he rejects the offer, he will immediately become a free agent and the Diamondbacks will receive draft compensation. The end of the silent period is also the deadline for players who have the option to opt out in their contracts to exercise this option. There are no D-backs with opt-out clauses this season.

Teams are also required to reinstate all players on the 60-day Injured List at the end of the quiet period. That includes Drey Jameson, Kyle Nelson and Bryce Jarvis for the Diamondbacks.

5-7 November:

General Manager meetings will be held at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country in Texas.

19 November:

Deadline for a player to accept or reject a qualifying offer. This is also the deadline to add a player to the 40-man roster to avoid the Rule 5 Draft.

22 November: Tender Deadline

This is the deadline for teams to offer contracts to unsigned players, whether pre-arbitration or arbitration eligible. A “non-tendered” player becomes a free agent. You’ll see this play out in the case of players who are expected to receive a significant raise through arbitration, even though they’re coming off a down year.

The Winter Meetings are the most important offseason event for MLB. Numerous media events, Hall of Fame Announcements and trade shows are held in addition to meetings between teams, players and free agents.

The trading calendar includes: MLB Draft Lottery on December 10th and Rule 5 Draft On December 11th.

December 15: This date marks the end of the previous season’s international signing period.

January 10: Teams and arbitration eligible players Exchange arbitration figures that have not yet been agreed upon. A hearing is then scheduled, usually in February. Teams and players can reach an agreement up until the start of the hearing.

January 15: The new International Signing Period begins.

February 21: Spring Training Games Begin

Cactus League play for the Diamondbacks will begin on February 21 and continue through March 23. Official reporting dates have not yet been announced, but camp generally opens on February 14 for all players.
