Man Wanted for Murder After 911 Call About Bear Tracking Leads to Discovery of Body

A man in Tennessee is wanted on suspicion of murder after a 911 call about a bear chase that resulted in the discovery of a body.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office on Friday in question is looking for 45-year-old Nicholas Wayne Hamlett in connection with the mysterious call. According to authorities, on Oct. 18, a man from the Tellico Plains area called 911 and said he was a distressed hiker named Brandon Andrade. The caller reported falling off a cliff after running from a bear.

Emergency services responded to the area and a body bearing identification belonging to Andrade was located; but further investigation revealed that the dead man was actually someone else.

Authorities said Andrade’s identity was “stolen and used multiple times.” They added that Hamlett used Andrade’s identity and “gave a false name while speaking to law enforcement in Knox County, TN, following a call of a dangerous hiker.”

Hamlett is currently wanted in another state for a parole violation, the sheriff’s office said. In 2012, Hamlett pleaded guilty to aggravated assault after holding a man at gunpoint in Prattville, Alabama, trying to hit him with a baseball bat and trying to bury him alive. AL.com reported. The news stated that Hamlett, who used the name Joshua Jones during the incident, was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

It’s unclear how Hamlett might be connected to the man who died in Tennessee. The body has not yet been identified and is referred to by authorities as John Doe.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are currently seeking information about the dead man as well as Hamlett’s whereabouts. Authorities consider Hamlett to be armed and dangerous and are urging the public to call 911 if he is seen.
