Clovis FFA Veterinary Science team earns top 5 national rankings

Clovis FFA Chapter members can now add a national ranking to their resume.

The Clovis FFA Veterinary Science team placed top 5 in the country this week at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis Indiana.

The team consists of students Emma Smalley (Clovis North Student), Navraj Sanhan (Clovis East Student), Leanne Chavez (Clovis East Student) and Sofia Vizcarra (Clovis High School student).

The team took 4th place among 46 teams.

The team was selected to represent California at the national competition by winning the State Championship this past spring.

Students participating in the competition answer veterinary knowledge questions, explain diagnosis and treatment plans for animals in scenarios, and answer medical mathematics questions.

Students also work together and present their findings to a panel of judges.

Clovis FFA Advisor and team coach Jennifer Knight said they had to work individually to answer veterinary knowledge questions, select equipment and tools, and demonstrate live detection and clinical skills.

β€œThe scenarios are examples of real-world cases that would be addressed in today’s veterinary practice,” Knight said.

All Clovis FFA members are part of the Animal Science Career Technical Education Pathway.

Sanhan, Chavez and Vizcarra graduated in June but returned for the opportunity to compete at the national level.

It is a great experience to learn and travel with our teammates,” said Chavez.

We had a lot of fun and we will carry this memory for a lifetime, Chavez said.

The Clovis FFA veterinary science team was previously nationally ranked in 2016.
