What’s going on in the old Spice House space on North King Drive?

Sweet Connie’s Cafe announced it will open a bakery and coffee shop in April 2023 in the former Spice House, the latest store to close on North King Drive, now a popular bar and restaurant district.

A year and a half later, the prime location at 1031 N. King Dr. is still closed. Here’s what we know about their plans.

Jake Dehne, owner of the building where bars RWB Milwaukee, Lucky Clover and 90s2K Cafe and Sweet Connie’s are planned to be built, said there were a number of problems that arose as the space was transformed from a storefront to a bakery with a commercial kitchen.

“Construction has currently been delayed by a year and a half due to serious unforeseen difficulties with electrical and building code requirements,” Dehne said in a text message. he said.

But Dehne said the building is close to being ready. He said the kitchen should be completed by mid-November and the cafe could open immediately after.

He couldn’t talk about whether Sweet Connie’s owner, Shelly Wiley, was ready to open.

Wiley did not respond to a request for comment from the Journal Sentinel.

Wiley told the Journal Sentinel in August that the bakery regularly hosts pop-ups at street festivals to keep the business afloat while the building is completed.

The business was previously run by Wiley and baker Consuela Towns. In August, Towns stepped away from the business to focus on her baking business but still continued to supply baked goods to Sweet Connie’s.

Towns did not respond to a request for comment.
