Car crashed into school fence in Australia, 5 children injured

MELBOURNE, Australia — A car crashed into a Melbourne school on Tuesday, injuring five children, including one in critical condition, police said.

The police statement said the car went over the fence at Auburn South Primary School just after 14.30 local time.

“One child was taken to the hospital in critical condition, while four other children were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” the statement said.

Stating that the driver was arrested and will be questioned, the police added that the cause of the accident will be investigated.

According to the Australian Broadcasting Corp., an unnamed Ministry of Education official said the injured children were sitting on a bench in the park.

A Department of Education spokesman declined to comment to The Associated Press.
