Digital Arrest Scam: How to spot and avoid becoming a victim – Money News

In the latest episode of ‘MannKiBaat’ on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi woke people up to the threat of defrauding the society by threatening them with ‘Digital Arrest’.

In digital arrest scams, scammers target individuals or businesses by posing as law enforcement or government officials, according to the bank. Warning against this scam, Manish Agrawal, Senior Vice President, Credit Intelligence and Control, HDFC Bank, said: “Scammers directly target the sentiments of customers. When someone receives a call or message from scammers claiming to be law enforcement officials, always contact government/law enforcement officials in proper manner.” Verify their identity by contacting them independently through the channel. Tips to protect yourself from Digital Possession Scams:

* Real government officials or law enforcement never ask for payment or banking information.

* Scammers often create a sense of urgency to get you to act quickly without thinking.

* Do not share sensitive information like KYC details, user ID password, card details, CVV, OTPs or bank details like PIN number with anyone.

* Always verify the identity of the officer by independently contacting a government official or law enforcement agency.

* Look for errors in documents and avoid clicking suspicious links.

* Immediately report any such suspected fraudulent communications to the Ministry of Telecommunications’ Chakshu Portal.
