    One child dead, four seriously injured after car crashes into fence at Melbourne school

    A child died and four people were seriously injured when a car crashed into a primary school fence in Melbourne.
    Emergency services responded to a single-vehicle crash in the Hawthorn East suburb, Victoria Police said on Tuesday afternoon.
    A car was said to have left the road and crashed into the school fence; Auburn South Elementary School.
    Police said an 11-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries but later died.
    Two 11-year-old girls, a 10-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy were seriously injured and taken to hospital.

    The driver was detained at the scene and is currently in custody. He will be interrogated by the police. No charges were filed.

    Inspector Craig McEvoy said after driving to collect her child, the woman made a U-turn and crashed into a fence.

    The car hit the table where five children were sitting.
    “It looks like a tragic accident,” McEvoy told reporters at the scene. The woman and her child escaped unhurt.

    The Department for Education said in a statement that it was working closely with school staff, students and parents to support them.

    Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said she was “sending love and thoughts to the students, their families and the entire school community” as she thanked first responders at the scene.
    “Today was supposed to be an exceptionally sunny Tuesday for the Auburn South Elementary School community. Instead, a dark shadow has been cast over our city and state,” Allan wrote in a post on social media platform X. he wrote.
    “I know Victorians tonight will be thinking of Auburn South Primary School and moving closer to our children.”
