Apple’s first M4-chip Macs will be a new iMac, not MacBooks as widely expected. The updated 24-inch 2-in-1 device features the new chip, as well as new colors and a nano-texture display option that reduces reflections and glare.

Arriving almost exactly a year after the launch of the M3 iMac, the new PC also features a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View, up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports, and color-matched accessories that now use USB-C instead of Lightning (see our roundup Apple’s Black Friday deals if you’re looking for a bargain on old tech).

Apple says the M4 chip, so far used only in this year’s iPad Pros, makes the new iMac up to 1.7x faster for everyday productivity and up to 2.1x faster for demanding photo and video editing using complex filters and effects in apps. says it makes it faster like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro compared to the iMac with the M1 (yes, it chooses to compare it to the 2021 M1 models instead of last year’s M3 models)

The new iMac will come with 16 GB of memory as standard, which can be configured up to 32 GB. The Cupertino technology giant continues to attach great importance to the artificial intelligence ability of the neural engine in the M4. He thinks this makes the new iMac “the world’s best all-in-one for AI,” which of course includes the new Apple Intelligence features in macOS Sequoia 15.1. It also claims that the new iMac is up to 4.5x faster than “the most popular 24-inch all-in-one with the latest Intel Core 7 processor.”

M4 iMac: design and colors

The new iMac comes in seven color options, adding silver as well as new shades of green, yellow, orange, pink, purple and blue. While the rear parts have bolder colors, the front parts stand out with lighter tones. Each color option also comes with a color-matched Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse or optional Magic Trackpad; all of which now feature USB-C.

The 24-inch 4.5K Retina display is now available with a nano-textured glass option designed to reduce reflections and glare, allowing users to place their PC in a “sunny living room or bright display case.” Meanwhile, the 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View support aims to make the video even more interesting. Three microphone arrays with beamforming and six-speaker audio remain available.

What’s highlighted in the press release is that Apple intends the new iMac to be a device for everyone. The company touts the improved performance and up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports* (the ports can support up to two 6K displays) for content creation and design workflows, but also highlights that the new webcam makes it perfect for families and educators.
