Crews gain upper hand on massive grass fire south of Valley Center

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Update: Fifteen units representing five agencies, including the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County Fire District 1, were able to protect homes from a large grass fire near 53rd Street North and Meridian.

Just before 6 p.m., Sedgwick County Fire Chief Brad Crisp reported that crews were making progress in containing the fire and that the fire was largely under control. There were initial concerns that the fire might spread to homes, but residents did not need to evacuate.

Crisp said 50 to 70 acres burned. As of Monday evening, it was unknown what caused the fire, but it was believed to be accidental, Crisp said.

Update: Sedgwick County Emergency Management said evacuations have been canceled for the area of ​​53rd Street and High Street near Meridian, just north of Wichita.

Emergency management said crews thought they might have to evacuate homes in the area due to the grass fire, but so far they have been able to keep the structures safe without an evacuation process.
