Steelers make roster moves ahead of Giants game

The Steelers made multiple roster moves today as they prepare to face the New York Giants on Monday Night Football at Acrisure Stadium.

Running back Jonathan Ward was placed on the practice squad’s active roster, receiver Brandon Johnson was promoted to the practice squad’s Active/Inactive roster, receiver Roman Wilson was placed on the Reserve/Injured List and running back Aaron Shampklin was released. Squad of 53 people.

Ward initially signed with the Steelers after appearing on a tryout basis at rookie minicamp and later signed a contract. Ward was promoted for the Week 5 game against the Dallas Cowboys and the Week 6 game against the Las Vegas Raiders and the Week 7 game against the New York Jets. He had five carries for 22 yards in three games.

He played in 46 games in five seasons in the NFL, carrying the ball 22 times for 91 yards, a 4.1-yard average. He also has six receptions for 52 yards, an 8.7 yard average and a touchdown.

Ward originally signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft. He spent more than two seasons with the Cardinals before joining the Tennessee Titans for the 2022 season. He also spent the 2023 season with the Titans.

Ward played college football at Central Michigan, where he played in 42 games, carrying the ball 473 times for 2,539 yards and 28 touchdowns. He also had 98 receptions for 909 yards and four touchdowns.

Johnson, who will return to the practice squad after the game, originally signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL Draft. He spent time on the practice squad and active roster the past two seasons.

Johnson played in 20 games, the first three, and recorded 25 receptions for 326 yards and five touchdowns. He played in 13 games in 2023, making 19 receptions for 284 yards and four touchdowns. Johnson also stepped up for the Week 7 game against the New York Jets.

Wilson, a third-round pick of the Steelers in the 2024 NFL Draft, played in just one game this season and did not participate in any receptions. He’s dealt with injuries all season, including an ankle injury he suffered in training camp and most recently a hamstring injury.

Shampklin, who played at Harvard, served on the practice squad and 53-man roster this season. He had six carries for 17 yards this season.
