New pedestrian crossing coming to Dunkirk Drive and Fermor Street

Winnipeg’s St. A new crosswalk in the Vital district could bring some big changes for drivers and pedestrians alike.

The pedestrian path opened at Dunkirk Drive and Fermor Street on Saturday. Once activated, if someone presses the button to cross the street, southbound drivers in Dunkirk will have to stop at a brand new red light for the first time in nearly 60 years.

“It will probably only be activated four times a day,” said area councilor Brian Mayes. “But this will allow people to cross safely to the other side.”

Mayes said the light has been solid green since the 1960s, which means the new light may surprise some drivers.

“We don’t talk about crosswalks much,” Mayes said. “If you’re heading south, we want to let people know that after all these decades there’s been a slight change in orientation here.”

The city also asks pedestrians and drivers to be alert for the changes and keep their eyes on the road.
