Latest US elections: Donald Trump holds rally at iconic New York venue as Kamala Harris hits must-win state | US News

A comedian has come under fire for making an offensive joke about Puerto Rico and Latin Americans at Donald Trump’s rally in New York tonight.

Tony Hinchcliffe described Puerto Rico on stage as a “floating island of garbage”.

“I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally an island of garbage floating in the middle of the ocean right now,” he said.

“I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”

A loud “ooh” was heard from the crowd, drowning out the sound of laughter.

He also said that he welcomed immigrants to the United States with “open arms”, then added “what I mean by open arms is…” and said that he moved his arms in front of him as if to say “no”.

“These Latinas love making babies too, get this, they do, they do,” she said.

“There’s no getting out, they’re not doing it, they’re just getting in, just like they did to our country.”

Mr. Trump has been regularly criticized for his rhetoric against immigrants and has said he would carry out the largest deportation in U.S. history if he wins the election.

‘Know that this is what they think about you’

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat of Puerto Rican origin and born in New York, reacted to the comments during a live broadcast with Kamala Harris’ running mate Tim Walz.

“If there’s some asshole who calls Puerto Rico ‘floating garbage,’ know that that’s what they think of you,” he said.

“That’s how they feel about anyone who makes less money than them.”

In his defense, Mr. Hinchcliffe posted on X, accusing Ms. Ocasio-Cortez of having “no sense of humor” and saying he loved vacationing in Puerto Rico.
