Peddapalli: A fraud of around Rs 30 lakh was reported at Begumpet sub post office in Ramagiri mandal. While some customers were given fake passbooks without opening an account, money was withdrawn from some customers’ accounts without their knowledge.

The scam was discovered when several customers checked the balance in their accounts. Customers complained to higher authorities after some of the amount was missing from their accounts. Reacting to the complaints, officials led by Sub-Divisional Postal Officer A Mohan carried out checks at Begumpet post office and were shocked to find fake passbooks. Of the 1000 passbooks at the post office, 206 were found to be fake.

The investigation revealed that although the customers deposited money, the postmaster issued fake passbooks with his own signature and without opening an account in his name. On the other hand, money was withdrawn from some customers’ accounts without their knowledge. Sources say more irregularities may come to light as the investigation continues. On the other hand, it is learned that the official accused of fraud had requested the investigating officers to give him one month’s time to repay Rs.30 lakh.
