San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. will play against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, recovering from an ankle injury and illness that hospitalized him last week, according to ESPN. Adam Schefter.

Samuel was limited to just four appearances in San Francisco’s 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7 and was hospitalized with pneumonia following the game.

“I think he started kicking in around midnight Saturday night or early Sunday morning and just kind of improved as the day went on,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said. he told reporters. “I believe they sent him there after the game when we found out he had fluid in his lungs or something.”

Samuel’s illness summed up the Niners’ season in which several stars were sidelined for extended periods of time. On offense alone, running back Christian McCaffrey suffered Achilles tendinitis that kept him out for the first seven games, while wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffered a season-ending ACL and MCL tear.

The fact that the bottom hasn’t completely fallen out for San Francisco is a testament to the depth on the roster.

Aiyuk’s injury at the receiver position has made keeping Samuel healthy a higher priority.

The 2021 All-Pro has caught 20 passes for 335 yards and one touchdown so far; Those numbers are a bit skewed based on how little he played against the Chiefs. Still good enough to anchor the passing game.

If the Niners lose Samuel for an extended period of time, their offense could face serious problems.
