  • Several 2022-2023 Kia Carnival owners have filed injury reports with NHTSA.
  • A new lawsuit alleges that Carnival’s pinch sensor does not properly detect obstacles.
  • Plaintiffs argue that Kia’s earlier recall of the minivan for the door issue was ineffective.

Automatic sliding doors are one of those modern conveniences designed to make family life smoother, especially when your hands are full or your kids are coming in and out. So what happens when this feature goes from convenience to a potential security hazard? That’s the issue at the center of a new class-action lawsuit in the US alleging the sliding doors will be closed in 2022 and 2023. Kia Carnival poses a “serious risk of bodily injury” and puts passengers in danger.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, alleges that these Carnival models are equipped with a defective pinch sensor along the rubber seal on the edge of the doors. In theory, these sensors are supposed to detect any obstacles in the door’s path and prevent the door from closing if something (or someone) is in the way.

The lawsuit alleges Carnival The jam sensor often fails to recognize obstacles, and the only way to stop the door from being half closed is to press the jam sensor itself firmly.

Kia issues recall for reportedly defective doors But the class action lawsuit claims that this recall is “ineffective” because it is a simple software update that causes the door to close more slowly and also adds warning chimes. Plaintiffs claim this does not affect the force required to trigger the pinch sensor.
