A Florida woman who said she put her boyfriend in a suitcase while she was playing a game of hide-and-seek with him and then suffocated to death was found guilty of second-degree murder.

Winter Park resident Sarah Boone, 47, told police that she and her boyfriend, Jorge Torres Jr., were drinking on the evening of Feb. 23, 2020, when Torres voluntarily got into the bag and they were joking. when he zips up.

According to the criminal complaint, he told police they had an argument and he went upstairs to sleep, believing she could go out. When he woke up the next morning, he realized that the man was still in the bag and was dead.

Prosecutors said he knew he could not get out of the suitcase on his own, causing his death. On Friday, a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder.

“I zipped it up. We thought it was funny and we were joking that it was small enough to fit in the suitcase,” Boone told jurors. “We were laughing about it.”

Boone said he began filming on his cellphone during his trial and decided to chat with Torres while he was in the suitcase so he could express his feelings. She claimed that Torres had abused her in the past.

The approximately two-minute video was shown in the courtroom. In the video, Torres repeatedly says he can’t breathe and Boone can be heard laughing.

“That’s what you do when you choke me,” Boone said.

When Torres said he couldn’t breathe inside the suitcase, he replied, “That’s your responsibility.”

Boone said that after he stopped filming, he and Torres got into an argument while he was still inside the bag, and things escalated. Boone said Torres threatened him. He said he was afraid he would escape from the suitcase and was able to pull his hand away. He told the court that he was angry and afraid that he would hurt himself if he got out of the suitcase. He grabbed a baseball bat and hit his hand to get it in.

According to the criminal complaint filed against Boone and testimony in court, Torres’ autopsy showed bruising on her hand and contusions on her skull, and her lip was also “burst out.”

Boone told jurors he didn’t believe she could die in the bag and didn’t try to kill her. He said he woke up the next morning and looked all over the apartment for her, then found her still in the suitcase.

Boone faces life in prison and will be sentenced in early December, according to court records.
