Apple wins $250 from Masimo in watch patent attempt

A federal jury ruled Friday that Masimo smartwatches infringe Apple patents, but Apple isn’t getting a big payday.

Bloomberg Law reports He said the company only sought the legal minimum of $250 and that was all he was given. “We’re not here for the money,” Apple’s attorney, John Desmarais, reportedly told jurors. Instead, he said the company hopes to force Masimo to “stop copying our design.”

The company may be disappointed in this regard. The jury did this. to find He said that the original design of Masimo’s W1 Freedom and health module and the original charger infringed Apple patents and that the infringement was intentional.

However, Masimo said in a statement that the findings only apply to the “discontinued module and charger” and not to existing products.

“Apple first sought an injunction against Masimo’s existing products, and the jury’s decision is a victory for Masimo in this matter,” the medical device company said.

The hearing stemmed from a countersuit in Apple’s ongoing legal battle with Masimo, which began alleging that Masimo’s patents were infringed by the Apple Watch’s pulse oximeter feature, which allows the watch to measure oxygen levels in owners’ blood. Apple disabled this feature on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2, and the feature is also missing on the following models: new Series 10. These limitations apply only in the United States; Apple is appealing the import ban on models with controversial features.

Desmerais reportedly told the jury that the pulse oximeter feature “had nothing to do with this case.”
