New Delhi:

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud said that lawyers must learn to pay proper wages and salaries to youngsters who enter their chambers to learn. In an interview with All India Radio, DY Chandrachud said that the legal profession is a difficult profession. The foundation laid in the early years ensures that young lawyers will fare well throughout their careers.

“There are always ups and downs in a profession. Initially, the amount you earn by the end of your first month in the legal profession may not be very high,” the CJI said.

Therefore, it is important to encourage first-timers to be patient, work hard and be sincere in what they do, said DY Chandrachud.

“Similarly, our structures need to change. For example, lawyers must learn to pay appropriate fees, wages and salaries to young lawyers who enter their offices,” he said.

“Young people come to their chambers to learn. They too have a lot to share, so it is a two-way process of assimilation, sharing and mentorship that we need to provide to young lawyers,” the CJI added.

DY Chandrachud also recalled his days working as a presenter on All India Radio during his college days in Delhi.

CJI said his mother, a classical musician, often took him to AIR studios in Mumbai when he was in third or fourth grade. Later, after moving to Delhi in 1975, she auditioned for Akashvani and started hosting programs in Hindi and English.

He also recalled how he grew up listening to AIR bulletins in Hindi, English and Sanskrit with his parents and was fascinated by the iconic voices of Devki Nandan Pandey, Pamela Singh and Lotika Ratnam.
