10 police officers killed in an attack on a police convoy in a restive southeastern province of Iran

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — At least 10 police officers were killed Saturday in an attack on an Iranian police convoy in the country’s restive southern province of Sistan and Baluchistan, officials said.

Details are still scarce about the attack in Gohar Kuh, about 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) southeast of the Iranian capital Tehran.

Initially, the reports merely described an attack by “malicious actors” without providing further information. However, shortly after, Iranian state media announced that 10 police officers were killed.

HalVash, a group advocating for the Baloch people in Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan, posted photos and video of what appears to be a disabled truck painted with the green stripe used by Iranian police vehicles. A graphic photo shared by the group showed what appeared to be the bodies of two police officers in the front seat of the truck.

HalVash said that the attack targeted two security force vehicles and that everyone in these vehicles was killed. The truck appeared to have been damaged only by bullets rather than any use of explosives.

The state-run IRNA news agency said the country’s interior minister, Eskandar Momeni, had ordered an investigation into the incident, which he described as causing “the martyrdom of several police officers”.

Authorities have not identified any suspects in the attack and no group has claimed responsibility. The attack came after Israel launched a major offensive against Iran in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Baloch districts in three countries face low-level crisis Rebellion of Baloch nationalists for more than twenty years. Information remains difficult to verify in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchistan, which has been home to violence involving heroin traffickers for decades.

The Taliban, meanwhile, said it was investigating reports that Afghan migrants were killed by Iranian security forces in the region in early October, an incident that threatens to further strain relations between the nations.
