There are 4 mastery camouflages in Black Ops 6 multiplayer: Gold, Diamond, Dark Spine and Dark Matter. Each can actually be seen as a layer. Gold is tier 1 and Dark Matter is tier 4. You must reach each of the lower tiers before climbing to the higher tiers. This is a step-by-step process.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has 33 weapons at launch. To get the Dark Matter you need to do all the camouflage challenges for all 33 weapons. Before you can progress through a weapon’s mastery camos, you must earn 2 of the weapon’s special camos, and before you can advance into a weapon’s special camos, you must earn all of its military camos.

Weapons in Black Ops 6 are separated by weapon type. All weapon types in Black Ops 6:

Step 1: Military Camouflages

Most camos are pretty easy to unlock. Military camouflage challenges for every assault rifle, submachine gun, shotgun, submachine gun, sniper rifle, sniper rifle and pistol are exactly the same.

To unlock all military camos for each of these weapons, you need 100 headshots with that weapon. For military camouflage for melee weapons, you need to get 100 kills with the weapon. For launcher military camouflages you need 50 kills or burst destruction.

Step 2: Special Camouflages

Once you have unlocked all military camouflages for an individual weapon (let’s say the XM4 as an example), you can now tackle the challenge of unlocking Special camouflages for that weapon. Continuing to use XM4 as an example, the special camos are Muddled and Machina.

To unlock the Muddled camouflage, you need to get 30 kills with the XM4 shortly after the sprint. To unlock the Machina camouflage, you need to get 30 kills without taking any damage while using the XM4.

Step 3: Golden Camouflage

Once you unlock special camos for a weapon, you unlock its ability to perform the Gold camo challenge. The Gold camouflage challenge for the vast majority of weapons in the game is to get a certain number of double kills with the weapon.

Once you unlock Gold camo for a weapon, you are done with that weapon until you unlock gold camo for all other weapons in that weapon class. For example, once you get the Gold camo for the XM4, you no longer need to do camo challenges for the XM4 until you earn gold for the other 6 assault rifles.

Step 4: Diamond Camouflage

Once you unlock the gold camo for each weapon in a particular weapon type (i.e. all 7 assault rifles), you can complete the challenge to unlock the diamond camo for each of the weapons in that weapon type. For the vast majority of weapons in the game, you need to get 3 kills without dying a certain number of times, usually 10 times, to unlock the diamond camouflage.

Once you unlock diamond camo for a weapon type, you’re done with that weapon type until you unlock diamond camo for all 33 weapons in the game.

Step 5: Dark Spine

Dark Spine is the third tier of mastery camouflages. To unlock Dark Spine for a weapon, you first need to unlock the diamond for each weapon, then do the Dark Spine challenge with a weapon. The Dark Spine camouflage challenge for the vast majority of weapons in the game is to get a certain number of triple kills with the weapon.

Once you unlock Dark Spine on one weapon, you’re done with that weapon until you unlock Dark Spine on all 33 weapons. Once Dark Spine is unlocked on all 33 weapons, you can start doing Dark Matter camouflage missions.

Step 6: Dark Matter

When you reach this step, you are in the final stage. To unlock the Dark Matter camouflage for a weapon in Black Ops 6, you must complete the Dark Matter camo challenge on that weapon. For the vast majority of weapons in the game, this means 5 kills without dying a certain number of times.

As you can see, neither camouflage is particularly difficult to unlock in the sense that the challenge is extremely difficult and requires a lot of skill. Mastery camouflage grinding is much more of a test of patience than a traditional test of skill.

You have to be ready to destroy your K/D ratio. You must be prepared to lose many games. You have to be willing to accept not having fun for long periods of time, because while the camouflage grind can sometimes be fun, other times it’s downright miserable, and you just have to accept that and move on.

There are some strategies you can use to make things easier.

Optimize Your Weapons for Headshots

You need 100 headshots with multiple weapons as you go through each weapon type for military camouflages. Getting 100 headshots with an assault rifle or SMG might not be that bad, but with shotguns that are only effective in certain scenarios or snipers that require more precise aiming, getting 100 headshots can be a bit of a pain.

When having your weapons crafted by a gunsmith, prioritize attachments that will ensure headshots land the hardest and make headshots as easy as possible.

Play hard

Hard game modes can be an effective way to create camouflage, especially headshots, because obviously everyone dies faster. But be careful when using this method, because you may encounter trolls on your team, and even if the other team dies faster, so do you. Depending on your playstyle or your willingness to change your playstyle specifically to face challenges, hardcore may not actually be faster.

Craft Easier Weapons First

Progress is the name of the game. Assault rifles, SMGs, and LMGs generally feel much easier to me than snipers, melee weapons, and launchers. All three weapon types make up approximately 50% (16/33) of the total weapons in the game.
