The Land Transport Authority and Fiji Police Force have signed the National Joint Operations Order for the festive season.

The aim of the initiative is to improve road safety, reduce road deaths and ensure strict adherence to road rules and regulations throughout the festive season.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa says the operational order, which includes collaboration with city council officials, solidifies a coordinated approach to enforcement in response to the recent increase in road traffic crashes resulting in serious injuries and deaths.

The operation will run from November 1 to January 31, 2025, a period typically associated with increased road traffic due to holiday activities, family gatherings, and celebrations.

“The festive season brings increased risks on Fijian roads as people travel more frequently and sometimes take unnecessary risks while driving. “With road safety as a top priority, the joint operations order outlines comprehensive measures aimed at reducing road accidents and deaths.”

Rokosawa says the recent increase in traffic accidents and deaths has led authorities to take rapid action against speeding, drunk driving, driver fatigue and reckless driving behavior.

He added that checkpoints, random vehicle inspections and mobile patrols will be established in high-risk areas in Fiji to ensure compliance with traffic laws and regulations.

Rokosawa emphasized that the joint operation demonstrates Fiji’s determination to work together to keep its roads safe and save lives.
