PALO ALTO COUNTY, Iowa (KTIV) – A man was transported to an Iowa facility to begin his prison sentence Friday afternoon for his involvement in a fatal crash.

On Wednesday, October 23, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office transferred 47-year-old Brian Michael Freeman to the Iowa Medical Classification Center in Oakdale, Iowa.

Palo Alto deputies say both the transfer and the ticket stemmed from a fatal two-vehicle crash 2022.

“Freeman was the driver of the motor vehicle that killed Landon Richard Schiek, 26, in a crash that occurred near Cylinder Iowa on June 12, 2022,” the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office said.

Documents say the crash occurred at 10:07 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, 2022, while Freeman was driving a Chevrolet Silverado northbound on Highway 18.

Law enforcement officials said Freeman’s vehicle crossed the center line of the highway and struck Schiek’s vehicle, which was traveling eastbound at the time.

Documents say Freeman told officers at the scene that he had been drinking. Officers later obtained a search warrant for a blood alcohol test.

Officers said Freeman’s reported blood test showed a blood alcohol content of 0.117%. Following the crash, Freeman was sent to the Palo Alto County Jail.

Freeman was transported to the facility following his sentencing in Palo Alto County District Court on Friday, October 11. Freeman was sentenced to an indeterminate term of imprisonment not exceeding 25 years.

“Following a trial that began on August 6, 2024 and ended on August 9, 2024, Freeman was found guilty of Vehicular Homicide While Under the Influence of Alcohol, a class B felony.” the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office said.

Following the hearing, Freeman was placed in the Palo Alto County Jail to await sentencing, according to deputies.

According to court documents, Freeman’s license was suspended for six years by the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Freeman will also be required to complete a course on drunk driving and attend rehabilitation services. The documents also say Freeman will have to pay $150,000 in restitution.

Following sentencing, Freeman was placed in the custody of the Iowa Department of Corrections until his transfer to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Oakdale, Iowa.
