Interview recalled before Richard Allen’s arrest in Delphi murders case

DELPHI — Exactly two years after police made an arrest in the killings of Delphi teenagers Abigail “Abby” Williams and Liberty “Libby” German, a lieutenant described an interview they said helped take a suspect into custody.

On Saturday, Lt. Jerry Holeman returned to the bench in Carroll County Circuit Court at the hearing against Richard Allen to describe his altercation with the Delphi man on Oct. 26, 2022.

Allen, 52, is accused of killing two teenagers who went missing on Feb. 13, 2017, and were found dead the next day. He was arrested in 2022 and faces two counts of murder in the commission of kidnapping and two counts of murder in the killings. Williams and German.

Holeman recalled calling Allen for questioning to get information about an unspent cartridge found near the girls’ bodies, a key piece of evidence in the case.

During the interview, Holeman said he asked Allen how the bullet at the scene was connected to the gun found in his home. Holeman said Allen had no explanation.

Allen never borrowed anyone’s Sig Sauger firearm, clothing or car, Holeman said. Allen also said he wasn’t carrying his gun when he went for a walk on Feb. 13, 2017.

Holeman said Allen’s demeanor during the interview was “calm and normal” at first, but he became increasingly agitated as he continued to be asked questions about the tour. Allen also showed signs of deceit, such as looking down and touching his face, Holeman said. He acknowledged the signs were “subtle.”

At the end of the interview, Holeman said he told Allen that he and Allen did not think his wife was a bad person, to which Allen responded: “What good person would kill two girls?”

One of Allen’s defense attorneys, Andrew Baldwin, noted during cross-examination that Holeman looked down during his testimony and indicated whether this was a sign of deception.

Baldwin also noted that the beginning of Allen’s 2022 interview was not recorded due to technical difficulties, saying it was one of “many missing videos” in the case. He also asked Holeman about the possibility of more than one person being involved in the incident, as well as whether the voice heard in the “Bridge Guy” video belonged to someone not in the photo.

The trial will continue on Monday after a break on Sunday.
