Fatal car crash causes 2 brush fires to close Route 44

NORFOLK, CT (WFSB) – A serious car crash Friday night resulted in a fatality and led to the closure of Route 44.

The crash caused downed power lines in the Greenwoods West Road area, which sparked two brush fires on either side of the road.

So far, 2 acres have burned, according to Norfolk Public Information Officer Jon Barbagallo. The fire has since been brought under control.

Police were unable to identify anyone involved.

Route 44, the east-west corridor in the northwest corner of the state, will remain closed while Eversource works to restore power.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation has implemented detours to assist drivers in the area.

In the early hours of Friday, Governor Lamont declares state of emergency Critical fire in Connecticut due to weather conditions.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
