WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden He vowed Thursday to ensure a peaceful transfer of power following President-elect Donald Trump’s resounding election victory, telling supporters that “defeat doesn’t mean we’re defeated.”

“Setbacks are inevitable, but giving up is inexcusable,” Biden said in a short speech in the White House Rose Garden. he said. “We all fall down, but the measure of our character – as my father said – is how quickly we get back up.”

Biden, two days after Vice President Kamala Harris, lost the election Trump made it clear to Americans that he accepted the outcome. Trump famously refused to accept his loss to Biden four years ago.

“I know for some people this is a time of victory, to state the obvious,” Biden said. “For others, it is a time of loss. Campaigns are a contest of conflicting visions. The country chooses one or the other. We accept the choice the country makes. I have said many times, you cannot love your country when you have only your own gain.”

He added: “On January 20, we will have a peaceful transfer of power here in America.”

Trump will be sworn in as the 47th president in 78 days. Over the last two years Biden warned He said Trump’s second presidency would threaten American democracy. But he didn’t address that concern in his speech and instead tried to ease Democrats’ concerns.

“We lost this war,” Biden said regarding the 2024 election results. “The America of your dreams beckons you to rise again. This is the story of America, over 240 years old, and it continues. It is a story not just for some of us, but for all of us. The American experiment continues. We go on to be good, but we must stay engaged. We must go on, and every “First of all, we must preserve our faith.”

81-year-old Biden did not take questions from journalists after his speech, which lasted approximately 7 minutes. After Trump’s win, Biden faced criticism from fellow Democrats for initially deciding to seek reelection despite concerns about his age, but dropping out less than four months before Election Day.

Biden called on Americans to “turn the temperature down” now that the election is over and said he hoped the 2024 election would “put to rest the question about the integrity of the American electoral system.”

“It’s honest, it’s fair, it’s transparent, it’s trustworthy, win or lose,” Biden said.

In a stunning political comeback, Trump pulled off a sweeping victory, winning or holding a comfortable lead in all seven swing states, making big gains across the country (including for Latinos and Black men) and capturing at least 295 electoral college votes. If Trump wins Arizona and Nevada, where he is ahead, the number will reach 312.

Biden touted his past four years in the White House as a “historic presidency,” pointing to his legislative record that includes historic spending on infrastructure and clean energy production.

“Remember everything we have accomplished,” Biden said. “The work we are doing is already being felt by the American people, and much of it will be felt in the next 10 days. The legislation we passed is only now coming into full effect.”

During a phone call Wednesday, Trump accepted Biden’s invitation to meet with the outgoing president at the White House in the near future. Biden said on the call that he congratulated Trump on his victory and committed to a smooth transition.

Biden said, “I assured him that I would direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition. This is what the American people deserve.” he said.

In 2020, Trump did the opposite, pushing baseless claims of voting fraud to overturn the 2020 election, culminating in Trump supporters storming the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Trump has not spoken publicly since his inauguration notes Early Wednesday morning from West Palm Beach, Florida. The president-elect also has not posted on X or Truth Social since winning back the White House.

Biden initially sought re-election and secured the Democratic nomination during the party’s primaries. But due to mounting pressure from top Democrats, he dropped out of the race weeks after a disastrous debate performance. The move cleared the way for Harris to secure the nomination, but left her with just 107 days to present her case to voters.

Following Trump’s loss to Biden in 2020, the long-standing tradition of the incumbent president hosting the president-elect was not followed. Trump also did not attend Biden’s inauguration and has so far refused to concede the 2020 election.
