Local school counselor and social workers recognized for their assistance to Western NC

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Some local school staff were recognized Wednesday night for their efforts to help Western North Carolina students in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

According to Brunswick County Schools (BCS), three school social workers and a school counselor traveled to Buncombe County following the storm to help students return to classrooms in areas heavily damaged by the storm.

“Like many school systems in Western North Carolina, Buncombe County Schools has experienced tremendous loss of life, homes, cars, and lack of safety. The school system lost four students due to the impact of Hurricane Helene; The official number of lives lost exceeded 100 and more than 500 homes were lost,” BCS notes.

Amy Chapman, Jennifer Ordonez, Jennifer Read and Erin Rutkowski were recognized at Wednesday’s board of education meeting.
