Road construction worker killed after being struck by car on I-75 in Detroit

A road construction worker died after being struck by a car on Interstate 75 southwest of Detroit, Michigan State Police said.

Troopers were called to the crash scene on southbound I-75 in Springwells around 1:40 p.m. Tuesday, MSP reported. Police temporarily closed the highway during the investigation.

According to the preliminary investigation, a man working with a moving road crew was placing road flares among construction vehicles in the right lanes of the highway when he was struck by a Kia sedan.

Paramedics took the injured man to hospital and his condition was critical, police said.

MSP also said the driver of the sedan, 71-year-old Allen Park, remained at the scene of the crash.

A 53-year-old road construction worker from Lincoln Park died from his injuries, authorities said Thursday.

“We want to remind drivers to pull over when they see construction vehicles working on the side of the road or on the road,” Michigan State Police spokesman Senior Lt. Mike Shaw said in a post on X. “After the investigation is completed, the Investigator’s report will be submitted to the prosecutor’s office.”

There were 8,017 road work zone crashes last year, according to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. The agency said 21 of the crashes were fatal, resulting in 24 deaths.

The figures compare with 7,436 road work zone crashes in 2022, of which 22 were fatal and 23 were fatal.
