The party that will control the US House of Representatives, one of the two chambers that make up the US Congress, remains unclear.

The lower chamber currently has a Republican majority, and Democrats were hoping to flip that with several key races.

Every seat in Parliament is up for grabs this election season. It’s important to note that the final number may not be known for another few days.

Republicans won several races on Tuesday, giving them control of the upper chamber, the Senate.

Here are some of the races that could determine control of the US House of Representatives:

Sarah McBride made history as the first transgender member of the U.S. House of Representatives after winning her Delaware district on Tuesday evening.

McBride, who has already made history by becoming the first openly transgender person elected to a state Senate seat, faces Republican John Whalen, a former Delaware state trooper.

He defeated Whalen by 15 points in Delaware’s at-large congressional district, which covers all of Delaware.

“Delaware has sent the message loud and clear that this is a democracy that protects reproductive freedom, guarantees paid leave and affordable child care for all our families, ensures housing and health care are available to all, and that this is big enough for all of us,” she wrote. to X after the win.

Virginia: Differences razor-thin in two key regions

In Virginia’s 2nd district, which includes Virginia Beach, Democrat Missy Cotter Smassal challenged incumbent Republican Rep. Jen Kiggans.

Votes are still being counted in the race between the two Navy veterans, but as of Wednesday morning, Kiggans holds a four-point lead. It marks one of the most competitive races in the state.

Also in Virginia, two candidates are seeking to fill Democrat Abigail Spanberger’s seat after she decided to run for governor rather than seek re-election.

Republican candidate Derrick Anderson and Democrat Eugene Vindman are vying to represent Virginia’s 7th district, which includes Fredericksburg and Culpeper in the northern part of the state.

The district narrowly flipped from red to blue in 2018, the year Spanberger first won.

As of Wednesday morning, the race had not been called.

Pennsylvania: Democrat wants to unseat six-term incumbent

Pennsylvania’s 10th congressional district, in the south-central part of the state, sees a matchup between six-term incumbent Scott Perry and Democratic challenger Janelle Stelson.

Perry, the former chairman of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus, does not yet face a strong opponent. He helped lead the Trump campaign’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Stelson is a former TV news anchor and former Republican who registered as a Democrat last year.

CBS, the BBC’s US news partner, reported that Perry was ahead by less than a point as of Wednesday morning. However, the race was not officially called.

In Pennsylvania’s 8th district, Republicans flipped a seat in the district that includes President Joe Biden’s hometown of Scranton.

Business owner Robert Bresnahan defeated incumbent Democratic Rep. Matt Cartwright by two points. Cartwright served six terms.

Republicans shifted four seats in the 2022 midterm elections, paving the way for a takeover of the House of Representatives.

Democrats wanted to win them back, but they met with mixed results Wednesday morning.

In the 17th congressional district, considered one of the most contested districts in the United States, incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Lawler met a challenge from former Democratic Congressman Mondaire Jones.

But in the 19th congressional district, Democrat Josh Riley claimed victory, taking the seat from Republican Rep. Marc Molinaro.

The rematch race in upstate New York was considered one of the most expensive House races in the country. Molinaro won in 2022 by just 4,500 votes.
