‘370. ‘Restoration of the article will not happen’: Strong message from BJP’s Smriti Irani after turmoil in J&K meeting

The BJP leader and former MP launched a vocal criticism of the Opposition’s INDIA bloc in a press conference on Thursday; The Jammu and Kashmir assembly was marred by disruptions that led to a very unparliamentary demonstration over Article 370.

The Iranian was addressing reporters after the chaotic session in parliament, where Awami Ittehad Party MLA and Engineer Rashid’s brother Khurshid Ahmed Sheikh unfurled a banner advocating restoration of Article 370.

Opposition leaders protested aggressively in the J&K Assembly, prompting the speaker to briefly suspend the proceedings when BJP members started shouting slogans against the recently passed resolution calling for special status for erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir.

BJP members caused an uproar on the ground after the resolution passed by the Parliament yesterday that the Center should create a constitutional framework to restore the special status of the erstwhile state.

Irani emphasized that the BJP is determined on this issue and said, “The restoration of Article 370, which was abolished in 2019, will not take place.” He reiterated that efforts by the INDIA alliance to annex Jammu and Kashmir from India would be in vain.

The resolution to which Irani referred was introduced by deputy prime minister and National Conference leader Surinder Choudhary, calling on the Government of India to initiate discussions with elected representatives on restoring the special status of the region. However, this demand was met with strong opposition from the BJP members, who voiced their opposition loudly in the parliament.

Irani also challenged Congress leaders and the INDIA alliance and questioned their commitment to the rights of the tribal community in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370. “Yesterday’s decision shows tactical support to extremism and terrorism by the Congress and India Alliance,” he said.

He condemned the Assembly’s actions as an “audacious disrespect” of the rights of marginalized communities and declared that the BJP and the citizens of India would not tolerate attempts to undermine the Constitution. “The scenes in Jammu and Kashmir show a blatant attack on the constitutional rights of Dalits, tribal communities and women,” Irani said, emphasizing the BJP’s resolve to preserve national integrity and uphold constitutional principles.
