Savannah Christian’s Elijah Griffin named statewide Player of the Week

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Savannah Christian defensive tackle Elijah Griffin has been named Georgia High School Football Daily’s Player of the Week. This is a statewide award given to just one player out of thousands of players at more than 400 high schools in Georgia.

This award follows Griffin’s performance in the Raiders’ 14-7 win over Toombs County last Friday. This victory gave Savannah Christian the district title and allowed them to finish the season with a perfect 9-0 record.

In Friday’s win, the 6′5′, 290 lb. The senior had 10 total tackles, a season-high 5 tackles, and 1.5 sacks.

“Going into this game was personal because I never won a district championship as a senior and the last thing I witnessed was when I was a ball boy in eighth grade, so we had to win,” Griffin said. . “I had no choice. In my mind it was either win or actually go home. I really had a dog mentality.

The honor comes on the heels of Griffin announcing on Oct. 18 that he will play at the University of Georgia after graduating in December.

“Time goes by so fast. It’s already November, so I only have a month and a few days left to move on to the next chapter. It’s definitely settling in,” Griffin said.

Now that he has won his first regional championship, Griffin will try to finish his high school career with a state championship. He and the Raiders Raiders have some time to rest before taking the next field. As regional champions, they will get a bye in the first round of the playoffs and won’t play their next game until November 22.

“We want to get back (to the state championship game) and bring it back home. We will do this too. “We focus on that every day, but we have to improve week by week with every opponent we face.”
