Mets Rivals Talk to Scott Boras About Pete Alonso

It didn’t take long for the Pete Alonso sweepstakes to heat up this winter.

we know New York Mets They are interested in bringing Alonso back to Queens as long as it makes financial sense. But the Mets aren’t alone; like ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel “There are plenty of other teams that like Alonso as a player in the $100 million to $125 million range,” an article published on November 5 noted.

And the baseball community learned that the Mets’ crosstown rival, the New York Yankees, were among the teams inquiring about Alonso after Yankees GM Brian Cashman revealed as much to the media on Tuesday.

Asked if Alonso’s name was mentioned in a phone call with Alonso’s manager, Scott Boras, Cashman said, “Yes, of course it was.” per SNY. “There are a lot of high-quality players in this market, and Pete certainly did a great job with the Mets.

“(I) Had a brief conversation with Scott about a lot of his free agents, which is normal, and Pete is one of them, so yeah,” Cashman continued.

Well-intentioned slackers like Alonso rarely hit the free agency market, so it’s no surprise the Yankees are interested.

But the good news for Mets fans is that the Yankees are unlikely to sign both Juan Soto and Alonso this offseason. So if they are seriously pursuing Alonso, that probably means Soto is going somewhere else, and that other place could very well be the Mets.

While losing Alonso (especially to the Yankees) isn’t ideal, getting Soto instead should come as a relief to Mets fans.
