Trump claims ‘pressure’ after Kamala Harris win in Iowa Poll

Former President Donald Trump joins chorus of Republicans criticizing Des Moines Register latest Iowa Poll That showed her trailing Democrat Kamala Harris by 3 percentage points.

At a campaign rally in Lititz, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, Trump sought to discredit the poll results released Saturday evening, calling them “suppression.”

“This is called suppression. “They are suppressing” Trump said. “And it should actually be illegal.”

Selzer & Co., which conducted the Iowa Poll. J. Ann Selzer, the company’s president, said Sunday that it’s common for candidates to question negative polls.

“I think this poll has a good chance of motivating Republicans to go out and vote,” Selzer said. “They may have thought they would win easily. So it’s hard to think of it as pressure.”

The Iowa Poll showed Harris leading Trump 47% to 44% among likely Iowa voters (those who have already voted or say they will “definitely” vote). There is a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percent.

This was a surprising result in a state that Trump had carried twice before. The poll set the internet ablaze Saturday night and provided fodder for Sunday talk shows as analysts parsed the results and observers spread social media memes.

Truth on Social On Sunday morning, Trump touted his support for Iowa farmers and denigrated the poll, saying it was conducted by “a Trump hater who said for the last time this was totally wrong.”

But the Iowa Poll a long history An accurate assessment of the state of the race the weekend before the general election, including the last two presidential races.

In 2016 and 2020, the Iowa Poll was one of several polls that revealed Trump’s unexpected strength heading into Election Day.

Iowa Poll showed Trump in 2016 7 percentage points increase Ultimately against Democrat Hillary Clinton won the state by 9 percentage points.

And in 2020, it showed him: He is ahead of Democrat Joe Biden by 7 points before winning state 8 percentage points.

Earlier this year, Iowa Poll showed Trump Leads Biden by 18 percentage points.

Yet the former president ignored the results on Sunday. His team pointed to a separate survey conducted by Emerson College: Shows he’s a leader in Iowa.

“And we even moved up the polls,” Trump said at his rally in Pennsylvania. “But I think it’s so much more than just the polls. You know the polls, I’m telling you, you can make those suckers sing. If you find the right pollster, you can do it – and you do – it really hurts. You know when you like that person from Iowa. Today, the election is actually “We are talking about Turkey, it comes out with a survey that is different from all other surveys, because it was out of the question. It’s really the opposite. I’m very high.”

Iowa’s Republican leaders also joined in his dismissal, calling the Iowa Poll an outlier.

“Iowa Republicans are leading in early voting for the first time in decades, increasing our voter registration advantage by more than 130,000,” said Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds. he tweeted Saturday night. “If we vote and join our friends, President Trump will win Iowa. Let’s prove the Des Moines Register wrong once again!”

Final Iowa Poll for 2018 governor’s race It showed Reynolds trailing his Democratic rival by 2 percentage points; This result was also within the survey’s margin of error. won approx. 3 percentage points.

Democrats in Iowa welcomed the result and warned their supporters that they should continue volunteering, knocking on doors and voting.

“Obviously, it’s very exciting for us that Vice President Harris is leading Donald Trump in the latest Des Moines Register poll,” Iowa Democratic Party Chairwoman Rita Hart said at a press conference Saturday night. “But I know people in Iowa are smart and know the difference between poll and election results. We’re still three days away from this election. So remember, it’s just a poll, and what really matters is that Iowans show up and make their voices heard.”

House Democratic Leader Jennifer Konfrst, D-Windsor Heights, said she was “pleasantly surprised but not shocked” by the results.

He said the results matched what he was hearing from women across the political spectrum following the state’s GOP-backed six-week abortion ban. came into force at the beginning of this summer.

“They’re tired of politicians interfering with doctors’ offices, and they’re looking for people who will actually fight for their freedom at the ballot box,” Konfrst said. “And this issue is salient and real, and the fact that Vice President Harris is talking about the same rights and freedoms all the way down to the candidates for the Iowa House of Representatives shows that this is what Iowans are looking for.”

Election day is Tuesday and polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
