Late Wilson double gives Fulham DRAMATIC win over Brentford

Harry Wilson scored twice in stoppage time as Fulham came back to beat Brentford 2-1 in a fascinating West London derby.

Wilson was the hero of the Fulham bench on Monday; After being on the wrong end of a late comeback against Everton last time out in the Premier League, Marco Silva’s side pulled victory from the jaws of defeat.

Fulham will feel it was a win they earned from a game they dominated from the start, with the Bees taking the lead through Vitaly Janelt’s stunning strike in the 24th minute.

But the Fulham pressure came on again as Wilson collected a superb cross from Adama Traore in the second minute of stoppage time and – after Bernd Leno had made an excellent stop to deny Brentford at the other end – to send on former Liverpool midfielder Craven. With a nod, the Fulham pressure finally came through. Get excited.

Fulham’s win lifted them to ninth place, while Brentford fell to 12th after their fifth league defeat of the season.

How did the match develop?

Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken was quickly called on after Fulham’s Raul Jimenez was comfortably stopped with a superb double save to deny Reiss Nelson.

But Fulham were stunned as Brentford scored with their first meaningful effort going forward, after Emile Smith Rowe and Nelson had failed to capitalize on better scoring chances – Janelt curling a superb long-range strike into the bottom right corner.

VJ surpasses Leno

Keane Lewis-Potter almost doubled Brentford’s lead on the stroke of half-time, his curling effort from the edge of the penalty area deflecting narrowly wide of the post.

Fulham continued to investigate, but their chances of salvaging a point ended in the 88th minute when Rodrigo Muniz denied a good chance.

But Wilson had other ideas; he somehow sent a return shot past Flekken and into the left side of Brentford’s goal.

Leno then prevented Fabio Carvalho from scoring against his former club and Wilson quickly capitalized on the goalkeeper’s work with a shot off his shoulder in the dying minutes.

Fulham’s substitutes prove the difference

For a long time it looked like Fulham would finish the match empty-handed, but Silva’s substitutes paid off as the home side turned the match completely around.

They looked particularly dangerous down their left, with Nelson and Antonee Robinson combining seamlessly to create promising clearances, but no one in white could finish them off.

Silva will have felt unlucky in the first half; Fulham had the upper hand from the first whistle, but after losing the ball in midfield they were caught out by a quick counter-attack (and a great finish) and it was clear that wasn’t the case. willing to make any hasty changes.

However, as the clock approached the end of the 90th minute, their desperation began to show; Players like Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey sent long-range shots straight at Flekken.

However, the introduction of Traore, and especially Wilson, sparked a comeback that will be remembered for a long time. After the pair combined on the right wing to restore parity, Robinson finally had some fun on the opposite flank and headed in Fulham’s winner.

Whether Wilson intended any of his finishes will not matter to Fulham.

The distant daylight of bees

Brentford have enjoyed the comforts of home of late, putting in entertaining displays in their last two games at the Gtech Community Stadium, with thrilling wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town.

However, they have struggled away from home this season, but it is no surprise that they have faced Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United on their travels.

They looked to have finally turned their luck away, despite losing chances for most of the match, with Flekken’s early interventions keeping Brentford in the match before scoring the opening goal.

They still struggled to break through against Fulham’s high press, with the usually influential Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa unable to assert themselves as the home side squandered chance after chance.

Brentford defended stoutly against crosses being lobbed into their own box, but a lapse in concentration at the wrong time cost them in the end, even if Wilson’s first-time finish was a touch of genius (or a slice of luck).
