While serving a life sentence at Gartree Prison in Leicestershire in 2010, John was also accused of murdering two of his former partners: Melissa Halstead, whose body was found in a canal in Rotterdam in 1990, and Patricia Fields, whose body was found in a canal in Rotterdam in 1990. He is thought to have been killed on the Regent’s Canal in Camden, London, in 2001 – while escaping the attempted murder of Delia.

He was convicted of both murders in 2011 and sentenced to life in prison. Judge Mr Justice Saunders said at the time (via: BBC):

“These were terrible, despicable crimes. Since the victims’ heads were removed, it is impossible to be sure how they were killed. The dismemberment of the bodies is a serious aggravating feature of the murders.

“Not only does this reveal the cold-blooded nature of the murderer, but it also greatly increases the distress of the families to know that some of the bodies of their loved ones have not been found. I do not know why the murders took place. Of course, I do believe that this defendant had control over his relationships with the women and, chillingly, that control over the women’s lives.” or I am convinced it extends to deciding that he must die.

“I have no doubt that the seriousness of these crimes is extremely high and that the most appropriate sentence is life imprisonment.”
