Derelict building in Bideford severely damaged by fire

A derelict property was “seriously damaged” following the fire.

Five fire engines were called to Churchill Way in Northam, near Bideford in Devon, at 20:10 GMT on Saturday and crews worked to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

Residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke and “low levels of asbestos” in the abandoned building.

Crews visited the area again at around 0710 GMT on Sunday and a spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said it was investigating the cause of the fire.
