Gates garage fire spreads to cars, threatens neighboring homes

GATES, NY – Firefighters responded to a garage fire Saturday morning and prevented the blaze from causing serious damage to the home next door. Everyone left both houses.

Firefighters received multiple calls regarding a fire on Flamingo Drive at 8:38 a.m. Saturday, according to Battalion Chief Nick Amendolare of the Gates Fire District. When they arrived at 8:41 a.m., they found the garage at 20 Flamingo Drive fully involved and the fire spreading to two vehicles in the driveway. It was also approaching the neighboring house at 18 Flamingo. Fire crews brought the fire under control at 9:01 in the morning.

At one point, a service power line had fallen on a metal chain link fence, and firefighters saw it “sparking and sparking,” Amendolare said, so they quickly moved RG&E outside to disconnect the utilities.

Amendolare said the fire never entered the home at 20 Flamingo and that it suffered smoke and water damage and that the facilities were closed so residents could not stay there right away. The neighboring house at 18 Flamingo has a broken window and some damage to the siding; He said residents came back inside.

There is no information yet on the cause of the fire, which is being investigated by the Monroe County Fire Marshal’s Office.
